With sustainability firmly at the top of the agenda for many commercial design projects, the demand for a balance between creating an attractive, contemporary workspace and achieving the highest level of sustainability has grown significantly.

A global leader in architectural planning and design, when HOK London set about designing its new office at the Qube in Central London, the practice challenged itself to lead by example, proving that environmentally conscious design can be achieved within the normal budgetary constraints for a commercial interior. The result is a stunning functional space that not only prioritises design but also has sustainability at its core, achieving LEED Commercial Interiors (LEED CI) Gold certification — a UK industry first. When it came to specifying the flooring for the 6,000 sq m project, HOK’s designer, Sam Bradly, called on the company’s preferred modular flooring supplier, Interface.

Sam commented: “Our offices are a reflection of HOK as a company, so it was crucial for us to select the highest standard of products that would deliver on both aesthetic and environmental grounds. Given its high quality portfolio, as well as its unrivalled commitment to and advances in sustainability, Interface was the natural choice for us.” HOK selected three Interface products to fulfil the design requirements at its new offices – Sherbet Fizz, Fastforward and the revolutionary TacTiles, a modular flooring adhesive method that eliminates the need for glue.

Fastforward carpet tiles were used throughout the office in ‘Iron’ to provide a dark finish that would be durable under heavy traffic. A cut-pile carpet tile, it is inspired by the lines of nature and architecture and the uses post-industrial recycled yarn in its manufacture.

“By redesigning our office, we were able to lead by example and actively demonstrate to our clients how a contemporary office space can be stylish while achieving the uppermost standard of green certification. The final design has been very well received by our staff and most importantly, by our clients.”
Sam Bradly, Designer, HOK

Strong accent colours – lime green, pepper red and pink – were selected in Interface’s Sherbet Fizz carpet tile to denote different zones within the office, such as collaborative and resource spaces. Sherbet Fizz offers an unrivalled combination of vibrant colours, performance and a cushioned feel, making it ideally suited for use in high-end projects across a variety of markets. In addition to its recycled backing, 100% renewable electricity is used in the manufacturing process, presenting an attractive proposition for projects with sustainability front of mind.

In order to install the carpet tiles, HOK specified TacTile – a ground-breaking product from Interface which provides a tidier and more sustainable alternative to liquid adhesive, due to a significantly reduced level of VOCs. In addition to speedy installation, the hard wearing adhesive tiles accommodate the easy removal and replacement of damaged carpet tiles, making maintenance even more convenient.
