“As well as creating a bespoke design to provide a much-needed update to the existing interior design, we had to select products that would provide the necessary level of durability for a university building. As the library is in constant demand, it was essential that the specified products would disguise the effects of high traffic and clean well.”Hannah Harper, Interface Concept Designer.
Brunel University Library
Brunel University in Uxbridge recently unveiled its new look library, courtesy of leading global flooring company Interface. The company’s products were used in the 8,500 square-metre refurbishment to improve the learning environment for its 15,000 students, in line with the university’s credentials as a world class institution.
To demonstrate how durable the chosen products were, Interface laid down samples of the selected flooring, before asking staff and students to spill an array of substances on the tiles.
Interface then proceeded to remove the stains, in order to demonstrate the durability of the flooring. Staff were amazed how well, and how easily, the stains were removed from the tiles.
The products used by Interface included its Lima tiles. Lima was used for the majority of the floor area, due to its hard wearing and functional credentials, and the blue and grey colourway chosen by Hannah created a contemporary design to inspire calm and focus.
Furrows tiles, which have a textured loop design, creating a chunkier appearance, were used as an accent feature in the break-out and café areas, again in blue tones to complement the Lima flooring.
Barricade, a more functional flooring option, was selected for the entrance and reception areas. The tiles keep high traffic areas clean for longer, by trapping dirt that would otherwise be trodden in to the carpet.
The specified products were used together in a scheme we call Design by Tile, in which we combine different products to create a unique design.
“We’re delighted with the new interior and have received very positive feedback from both staff and students.”Ann Cummings, Library Services Director, Brunel University.
The carpet tiles have given the library a fresh new look and, whilst contemporary, they are not so stylish that they will date too quickly.
The library now feels so much brighter and the design is more fitting for a well- respected institution such as Brunel.
